Food Assistance in the Town of Pulaski

Food Assistance and Distribution in the Town of Pulaski
Posted on 03/27/2020
Food banks and distribution centers have been around in Pulaski for quite some time; not everyone can afford a trip to the grocery store, especially at a time like this. Our existing food banks and assistance centers are still operating for those in need, and there have even been several others organizations that have stepped up to the plate to help out during this time of crisis.

New River Community Action is still operating their food bank, and are still operating at a full capacity to serve those in need. They are also in urgent need of donations. They offer a lot of resources through their emergency assistance program to those below the poverty line, and are ramping up their efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. If you'd like to find out more about how you can sign up for assistance or make a donation, check out their website here. They're currently taking new applications by phone appointment only, so if you'd like to get in contact by phone, give them a call at 540-980-5525.

Beans and rice Inc. are also continuing their services to those in need. They've modified some of their operating procedures recently in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, but they are still offering assistance. To find out how you can request assistance, visit their website or check out their Facebook page for up to date information; current circumstances may cause their operating procedures to change rapidly.

Pulaski County Public Schools have also adjusted to current circumstances. Schools have been closed in Virginia for the remainder of this year, but their Food Distribution Program has gone into overdrive. Every Monday and Wednesday, several food distribution sites gear up to hand out hundreds of meals to Pulaski County Public Schools students across our county. We're sure you're already aware of this if you have a child enrolled in Pulaski County, but just in case you're not you can find more information about how to receive food for your children on the Pulaski County Public Schools website

Pulaski Daily Bread is also stepping up to meet this crisis head-on. Recently they've been handing out food bags to all who ask, no questions asked. They rotate their lunches out daily, so they keep the variety fresh and give you options. Follow their Facebook page for more information. Similarly to Pulaski Daily Bread, Taking It to the Streets Ministries has also begun handing out daily food bags and cleaning supplies to people who stop by. For a food bag and supplies, you have to provide a valid I.D., and everything is given out based on the first letter of your last name, going by four letters of the alphabet each day. One bag is provided per household. Both Pulaski Daily Bread and Taking It to the Streets Ministries are in need of donations; if you'd like to help out, give them a call at 276-620-4293 for more information on how you can.

We've also been informed that City of Refuge is helping out those in need with their food bank. To donate or stop by if you're in need of food, check out their Facebook page as well as their website to see how you can get involved.

We can't thank these services enough for providing for those in need, both those who are established nonprofits and those who are stepping up to help their community. With a support network like this, we can ensure that Pulaski's citizens are well cared for during this crisis. If you want to volunteer in any way, don't hesitate to reach out to any of the organizations listed above; we're sure they would be grateful for your help.
